he words contemporary and modern often get tangled together
to describe interior design. Modern design actually began in the 1800's and then
eventually morphed into what we call Mid-Century modern design that started in
the early-to-mid 20th century. Contemporary on the other hand was a
style that started to come about in the 1970's and was originally a blend of
styles until it became recognized as its own style.
Today we wanted to separate the meaning of contemporary and modern
by looking at one of the most widely used rooms in the home: the kitchen.
Modern style tends to have a strict style format while contemporary tends to
shift. Here we will discern what makes a modern kitchen and where contemporary
and modern ultimately overlap.
