n 2012, the next generation of homebuyers entered the market. Generation Y is a new force, but they are expected to dominate the market by 2051. Recent surveys have reported that when asked, 82 percent of Generation Y feel that it is important to own a home and 50 percent said they plan to buy in the next three years. They are already exerting influence on the housing market. In June of 2013, the NAHB reported that builders were starting to design homes for Generation Y.
As Generation Y enters the market, there are shifts in what our houses with look like. Houses will be more unique than ever before, with a new emphasis on outdoor living spaces, and open floor plans will continue to be a desired feature for the social homebuyer.
